Background Check Policy
At Angels Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary, the safety and wellbeing of our animals, visitors, volunteers, and community partners are our highest priority. To help ensure a safe and trustworthy environment, all volunteer applicants are subject to a background screening prior to participating in volunteer activities.
Purpose of Background Checks
Background checks help protect vulnerable populations, safeguard the animals entrusted to our care, and maintain the integrity of our sanctuary operations. These checks are used solely to determine volunteer eligibility and are not shared or sold to any outside organization.
What the Screening Includes
Background checks may include:
- Criminal history record information
- Sex offender registry searches
- Identity verification and address history
Angels Acres does not request or consider credit history, financial status, or immigration information as part of volunteer screening.
Use and Confidentiality of Information
All information collected is handled in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and relevant state laws. Personal information, including Social Security Numbers and identification documents, is encrypted, securely stored, and destroyed immediately after the background check is completed.
Results are reviewed only by authorized staff or board members directly responsible for volunteer onboarding decisions.
Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination
Angels Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary is an equal opportunity organization. No applicant will be denied volunteer opportunities solely based on prior convictions. Any relevant findings will be individually evaluated considering:
- The nature of the offense
- The time elapsed since the event
- The relevance of the record to the volunteer duties
We are committed to fair, consistent, and non-discriminatory screening practices.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have the right to:
- Be notified before any adverse decision is made based on background information
- Receive a copy of your report and a summary of your rights
- Dispute any information you believe to be inaccurate or incomplete
